School-Based Prevention

Our school-based prevention programs teach a wide range of social skills that promote positive youth development and occur in classroom settings with large groups of students. We broadly implement the 15-week evidence-based Botvin LifeSkills Training Program (LST) in middle schools throughout the MPNN Region.

Botvin Lifeskills Training Program

Botvin Lifeskills Program (LST) is a 15-week, evidence-based program that helps students develop a positive self-image by assisting them in managing stress, expressing their emotions positively, thinking clearly, and making informed decisions. This program proactively addresses a wide range of risk and protective factors that results in preventing youth from becoming involved in negative and destructive behaviors. Evaluation studies show that LST helps to prevent and reduce the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

Since 2002, through grant funding from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY), we have served close to 20,000 middle school students. Our evaluations continue to show that students who complete LST are achieving significant gains in knowledge and attitude change on using tobacco.
